For the new year of 2009, I am hoping to add in more entries about product design and styling into my blog.. instead of the usual postings about my personal thoughts, daily routine and my job, where its getting a little too repetitive and may become a tag too boring..
To begin with, let's talk about what is good product design?
I believe good product design encompasses issues like satisfying unmet needs, ensuring ease of understandability and use, appropriate aesthetics, efficiency of production and post consumer recycling among other factors.
Please do share your own opinion on the above mentioned..
There are so many international retailers shipping good designs over all the world.. For this entry, let's look into 2 of my favorite online portals.. They do sell good designs over the web..
- 2Modern (Lightings from FLOS, Pablo, dForm, Arturo Alvarez)
- Urban Outfitters Europe (Household products)

One of the most popular lines of lightings 2Modern is carrying, is from FLOS
The Castiglione brothers (Achille & Piergiacomo) and Tobia Scarpa were the first designers to work with FLOS. They established a standard of production from the very start where top quality, aesthetics and function were paramount.
FLOS proudly maintains these standards today. Many of the numerous lamps designed for FLOS by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglione are undoubtedly some of the best-known and most successful products in the history of industrial design.

Over the years, prominent Italian and international designers have collaborated with FLOS to produce some of the most amazing lighting that is both functional and fashionable..
They includes Philippe Starck, Jasper Morrison, Antonio Citterio, Rodolfo Dordoni, Marcello Ziliani, Marc Newson, Kontantin Grcic, Marcel Wanders, Sebastian Wrong, Piero Lissoni and Tim Derhaag, among others.
Today, FLOS is a company with an international scope that offers a full range of lighting products for both architectural and residential markets. “Decorative” products have been joined by indoor and outdoor technical lighting systems with intent of further strengthening the architectural sector, while remaining firmly committed to design.

I guess it's true that the functionality of a product no longer helps to push sales... design and style plays a larger these days huh?

Hi Leon!
Nice description and overview. i like product that can communicate and feel related to. coz they're part of us and part of our living too.
I wonder what kind of childhood children in this era would have. Things are getting so metallic and artificial sometimes.
Cute mug! it reminded me of the animated cup from sesame street.
aha!... youtube has almost everything under the sky.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLWNgt-x4Gk&feature=related
I think I was 11 at that time. besides Art Attack, Sesame Street was another one that could make me sit still in front TV box.
At night, i will peep thru my door gap to inspect my Lego to see if they really move, same to the cups in kitchen too. haahaaa... how pathetic.
So nostalgic, missed my childhood.
Thanks for the memories!
Hi guys thanks for your many comments
Kyan, I studied product design at Temasek poly but now working as a property broker
Justin, I am sure they got both sides to it :)
Joshua, you are right.. now adays consumers are hard to please.. products must have that extra x-factor to sell..
Fable Frog, yes they looked great! they can search for the products and prices at the attached website link.. for pablo its US$$10.00 – $550.00 depending on size, without shipping
Thanks Amos for your comment and link.. its lovely! really!
lcfu, you can order it online :)
happy day ahead guys!!!
Gosh, the mug's cute!
IMOH, one of the most important aspects of good product design is to create the desire of ownership among the consumers... Look at how Apple lure their customers with their line of products...
